Our speaker at the April 2014 meeting was Idris Evans who entertained us to a fascinating and amusing account of the life and times of the Welsh Drovers who moved cattle and other livestock along the Drovers routes from Anglesey to London. His interest began when he started to use a metal detector to search the land at his home in the Vale of Clwd; he discovered numerous coins which were used by the Drovers as tokens in place of gold so that they were less prone to attack on the road. His talk covered the Drovers’ families, their lifestyle, working practices, leisure activities, routes and waymarks, and eventually their demise at the introduction of the railway. Idris brought us a token to look at along with another curiosity - a hoof shoe for a cow (as they had cloven hooves they needed two per foot). These were needed to keep the cows’ feet in good condition over the 300 + mile journey. He also brought along copies off his book which were available for sale, signed by the author! It is well worth a read. Thank you, Idris for an excellent afternoon.
